Touring Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle
In 1865, the well-preserved castle ruins, along with the surrounding forest, became part of the heritage of the city of Selestat, which donated them to William II of Hohenzollern in 1899.
The architect in charge of the restoration was Bodo Ebhart, a scholar and expert in medieval fortifications.
He carried out the renovation through surveys of the site, analysis of other similar buildings, and instructions from William II.
The works lasted from 1900 to 1908 and their primary aim was not to restore the site to its original state or make it an imperial residence.
But to make the castle a symbol of the power of the Hohenzollerns as well as a testimony/museum of the Middle Ages.
Ironically, in 1919, France regained possession of Alsace and thus the castle.
